Our Grass

Tifway 419 has been the go-to grass variety in West Texas for years. It is a sun-loving, drought-tolerant carpet grass that holds up well to traffic. It is the most widely used variety in our climate for sports fields, golf courses, commercial and residential lawns.

An amazing shade tolerant variety of Hybrid Bermudagrass. This lush carpet grass can thrive both in full sun and up to 50% shade. It’s deep green color and soft thick pile makes it our favorite barefoot grass.

Proper preparation is key to a healthy, long-lasting lawn. You’ll need to remove any existing grass or weeds, loosen the soil, level the surface, and ensure good drainage. For step-by-step instructions, check out our Before You Buy section to make sure your lawn is ready for a successful sod installation.

You should wait to mow your new sod until it has firmly rooted into the soil—usually about 2 to 3 weeks after installation, depending on the weather and how well it’s been watered. A good way to check is to gently tug on the sod; if it resists, it’s likely rooted and ready for its first mow. When you do mow, make sure your mower blades are sharp and only cut the top third of the grass to avoid stressing it.

It’s best to avoid walking on your new sod for the first 10 to 14 days to allow the roots to begin establishing in the soil. Excess foot traffic—especially right after installation—can cause uneven settling, poor root contact, or even damage to the sod.

If you have pets, try to keep them off the lawn during this period as well. For potty breaks, guide them to a designated area and rinse the spot with water afterward to minimize any potential damage. Once the sod has started rooting (you’ll feel resistance when you gently tug), you can gradually introduce light foot or paw traffic.
